Brian - agree w/ your points - I purposely used the qualifier "possibly" for the exact reasons you mentioned. Cost and the labor burden of maintaining estate vineyards is a significant impact on any winery - for the luxury of having "100%" control over wine grape quality (allowing for capricious mother nature/the weather).

Also agree that the winemaker's influence on the wine is a notable element in the winemaking process. We consider the wine maker to be much like a symphony orchestra conductor, guiding and bringing forth through winemaking techniques and cellaring options, "a symphony of palate pleasing flavors" from the wine grapes much as a Conductor brings a beautiful sound from his or her orchestra.

Thanks for the comment & sharing!!!

What’s a winery without vineyards ? A winery that’s possibly out of touch with its roots and mother nature…

At least you said possibly! I'd have to disagree with this point, some of us "winemakers" or "wineries" don't have the capital required to purchase huge tracts of land to farm grapes. I'm sure we'd all love to, and would prefer to be able to control the fruit that goes in "our" wine. However, with the cost of property, at least in Sonoma/Napa (Lake & Mendo too!) it can be cost prohibitive for a great winemaker to produce Estate wines.

I like what you're saying, the winery experience is all encompassing from the ground, to the grapes, to the cup. But don't forget that what you drink is an expression of a winemaker's influence on the fruit and two wines from the same row of grapes can be completely different based on those influences!

Cheers,
Brian Wing
