Shouldn’t wineries focus solely on their wine products? Isn’t it a distraction to farm wine grapes and offer lodging and entertainment venues?
In our view, Yes wineries are about fine wine – great wine is important, and – No there’s a lot more to wine than just what’s in a bottle!
We feel it’s correctly the entire (intimate) winery experience – the vineyards, the winery, the barrel room, the people, the winery equipment, the scenery, the landscaping, the fountains, the social aspects, traditional Italian themed décor, authentic wood-fired pizza ovens, and the entertaining facilities to pull it all together…
What’s a vineyard without a winery??? A winegrape grower/farmer…
What’s a winery that doesn’t make wine??? A wine bottling operation…
What’s a winery without vineyards ? A winery that’s possibly out of touch with its roots and mother nature…
What’s a winery with vineyards ? A winery that’s likely in touch with its roots and mother nature…
What’s a winery with vineyards and lodging? Modestly? In our unique view, a concept offering a complete and ultimate wine experience catering to wine lovers seeking a very special personal experience and possibly a welcome escape from urban life.
Winery lodging is an opportunity to relax and take in scenic rural vistas, inspect vineyards up close, get a private tour of wine making facilities, see the equipment, stroll the vineyards, and discuss the wine making process over barrel samples and glasses of wine.
Eagles Nest’s Vineyards were planted on our agriculturally designated land to grow quality European varietal wine grapes for Eagles Nest Winery…

At least you said possibly! I’d have to disagree with this point, some of us “winemakers” or “wineries” don’t have the capital required to purchase huge tracts of land to farm grapes. I’m sure we’d all love to, and would prefer to be able to control the fruit that goes in “our” wine. However, with the cost of property, at least in Sonoma/Napa (Lake & Mendo too!) it can be cost prohibitive for a great winemaker to produce Estate wines.
I like what you’re saying, the winery experience is all encompassing from the ground, to the grapes, to the cup. But don’t forget that what you drink is an expression of a winemaker’s influence on the fruit and two wines from the same row of grapes can be completely different based on those influences!

Brian – agree w/ your points – I purposely used the qualifier “possibly” for the exact reasons you mentioned. Cost and the labor burden of maintaining estate vineyards is a significant impact on any winery – for the luxury of having “100%” control over wine grape quality (allowing for capricious mother nature/the weather).
Also agree that the winemaker’s influence on the wine is a notable element in the winemaking process. We consider the wine maker to be much like a symphony orchestra conductor, guiding and bringing forth through winemaking techniques and cellaring options, “a symphony of palate pleasing flavors” from the wine grapes much as a Conductor brings a beautiful sound from his or her orchestra.
